Filippo Cerfeda headed the powerful De Tommasi/Cerfeda clan, which is based in Lecce. Cerfeda became a Sacra Corona Unita member in prison. He rose through the ranks quickly, and eventually replaced boss Giovanni De Tommasi when De Tommasi went to prison. Italian authorities put Cerfeda on their most wanted list, so Cerfeda fled to The Netherlands in 2000, where he would stay until he was captured. In The Netherlands he ran a drug ring and “enjoyed the good life” as he later said. He visited brothels, and used cocaine...lots of it. In Dutch magazine Nieuwe Revu a result of Cerfeda’s cocaine use is shown; when a bailiff rang Cerfeda’s doorbell, Cerfeda panicked and fled through the backdoor. He took 180.000 euro with him, which he then dumped somewhere in a trashcan. The money was lost.

Cerfeda was a dangerous man. In September 2002 Cerfeda killed two Yugoslavians and wounded another during an argument. In March 2003 Cerfeda was arrested and extradited to Italy. There he decided to become a pentito (government witness.) He confessed to committing more than ten murders since 2001. His brother Simone, who had been in prison since 2001, also became a pentito after hearing the news about his brother.
